Handmade Air Fresheners

In this article, you will find fun information for making air fresheners.  We hope this article will inspire you to start making!

Air fresheners not only make a room smell good but they can make great decorations. This week I made a set of air fresheners shaped as pretty pink ball gowns.

I used special paper and an inkjet printer to create the design.  The air freshener paper is thick and somewhat stiff like the air fresheners you use in your car. So you need to have an inkjet printer that accepts thick paper.  If you don't have an inkjet printer that will do this you can decorate your freshener paper in many other ways... can be decorated with paint, marker, pen, ink, embossed, heat transferred, and more.  You'll just need to test the method you use with the fragrance and method you plan to use to infuse your fresheners. After printing my design I cut them out on a laser engraver. Again if you don't have such a piece of equipment this paper can be hand-cut with scissors.  I also believe this paper could be cut on a vinyl cutter like Cricut or silhouette.  I haven't tried that yet but I will test it out and put my findings here soon. After cutting the design I tried a few ways to scent the paper.

  1. I painted both the front and back with a 50/50 solution of glycerin and candle fragrance.  This turned out nice without splotches or running the ink from the inkjet printer.  You may find varied results depending on your type of scent and method of decorating your design.
  2. I painted only the back of the design with my 50/50 solution.  I wasn't happy with this because it made the front look blotchy.  It left some parts dark. It appeared they had an oil stain on them.
  3. I painted only the front of my decoration with a 50/50 solution.  I liked this best. There were no splotches, it all looked even and I don't have to worry about the solution discoloring my paint.  I know if you get a scent on wood, and paint sometimes it will eat through a finish.  I wasn't sure if this was a possibility because I had diluted the solution with glycerin. Now I don't have to worry because I only painted the front.
  4. I placed 100% scent on a piece of cotton and placed it and my air freshener in a zip lock bag overnight.  It seems that the scent infused into the freshener without having to paint it on.  I like this method the best because now there's no worry at all about what the fragrance will do to my walls, although I can't imagine the scent will last as long this way.

For my freshener decorations, I finished them off by adding pink metal rings to the top of each shoulder and hooked it only a small gold hanger.I  used lemon verbena as my scent. I think it's a happy, exciting, clean smell making it perfect for the kitchen, bathroom, or guest bedroom.

For my next set of air fresheners, I thought I'd make some for my car.  I printed pictures of the grandkids to hang in the car and them into circles. I used the same freshener paper as the previous set.  I used 100% fragrance to scent them and only ran the edge in the liquid.  That also worked great.  For these, I used a pumpkin cinnamon latte scent.  The car smells great and they are fun to look at.

Finally, for my last air fresheners, I laser cut dresses out of balsa wood on a laser engraver and painted them.  I then painted the fragrance lightly on the back. I added little wooden hearts to the front for more decoration and finished it off with the same little gold hangers as above.   These are some of my favorite creations.

Conclusion:  We hope you'll start making and share your creations with us.
